It is with great sadness that we share that our beloved husband, father, and poppy Dave passed peacefully with his family at his side on April 21st, 2024, age 68 after losing a brave battle with Mesothelioma. Precious memories will be cherished by his wife of 46 years, Sharon; his two children, Amy (Darren, son Shayne) and Scott (Kelda, sons Nate and Jake); siblings Nancy, Brenda, Gordon (Hazel), Carol (Jim, deceased) and brother-in-law Wayne (Debbie), sisters-in-law Maureen (Paul) and Cathy (Keith, deceased). He was the most amazing poppy to Nate and the newest leaf on our family tree, twelve-day old Jake. Dave and Sharon have been inseparable since his family moved next door on Roosevelt Avenue in 1968. Sharon’s dad initially disapproved of her sneaking next door to visit Dave on his motorcycle; but that only fueled their relationship. They were married in 1977 and had two wonderful children. Their marriage of 46 years has been a testament to their faith and commitment to each other. Dave retired in 2020 after 47 years as an Autobody Technician. His loyalty was most obvious on snowstorm days where every other business and school was closed, but he would never take a day off. We always laughed that dad’s shortcut to anywhere in town was to take Blackmarsh Road. Dave picked up his motorcycle passion again when his children were older, loving to ride his Harley as often has he could. He enjoyed riding with local clubs the NLMRA and the CMCs that led to building life long friendships, especially with Maurice and Verna Humphries who became their travelling buddies. All that knew him know his true pride is his little piece of heaven in Chapel’s Cove. Over the last 31 years he has meticulously mowed and manicured acres of land; and built and expanded his cabin decorated with mementoes of Newfoundland’s seafaring past. His extended Chapel’s Cove family know how he enjoyed spending hours listening to music and watching the whales, and everyone agrees that no one could outlast him at the campfire. His close neighbours Bob and Sherry Myers have many fond memories of watching him puttering at the Cove, including fueling the fire for the annual Polar Bear Dip, and watching the beach to be ready to help anyone that needed a hand. A sincere thank you to the Community Paramedicine and Paramedic teams who came to comfort Dave in his time of need; we are grateful for the compassion and kindness shown to him and his family, they provide an invaluable service to the community. Visitation will take place on Thursday April 25th, 2024 from 2:00pm-4:00pm and 7:00pm-9:00pm at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 73 Commonwealth Avenue, Mount Pearl. There will be closing prayers in the visitation room with Father Wayne Dohey at 8:30pm. As an expression of sympathy, flowers are gratefully accepted, or a monetary donation can be sent to amymnewport@yahoo.ca. To honor his love of the community, we intend to install a special tribute near the beach in Chapel’s Cove, for everyone to sit and enjoy the ocean as much as he did. A celebration of his life will be held in Chapel’s Cove later this summer. Sharon wants everyone to know that if the rope is down, you are welcome to come on up to the deck to sit a spell and enjoy the view.
